History of Vishu

The history of the Malayalam New Year is rich and entrenched in mythology and tradition. The demon Narakasura was slain by Lord Krishna on this day, according to folklore, while another version claims that Surya Dev made his return on this day. Malayalam New Year is the day after Ravana’s death when the sun could finally rise from the east since it is stated that the demon king prevented the Sun God from rising from the east.

Significance of Vishu

According to the Malayalam calendar, the New Year begins with Vishu, a prominent event in Kerala. It is observed with customary ceremonies, feasts, and the giving and receiving of presents because it has a profound cultural, spiritual, and social importance. The celebration represents fresh starts, the triumph of right over wrong, and the victory of light over darkness. It’s an occasion for celebration, renewal, and being close to loved ones in order to ask for blessings for a joyous and prosperous New Year.

Celebration

The customary practice of viewing the Malayalam New Year Kani signals the start of the Vishu celebrations in the morning. The Vishu Kani, which consists of auspicious goods such as uncooked rice, flowers, coins, and other symbolic objects put in a bell-shaped jar called the Uruli, is set up by an elderly member of the household a day before the celebration. Alongside the Uruli is a lit Nilavilakku, a traditional lamp. To bring luck and wealth on the festival day, family members awaken with their eyes closed and gaze at the Vishu Kani first thing in the morning.

Following this ceremony, the family reads passages from the Ramayana, and then they light fireworks as part of the Vishu Paddakam celebration. The entire family then gathers to partake in the decadent Vishu Sadya, a traditional feast served on banana leaves and featuring 20–30 dishes. A few of the delectable dishes offered during the feast included Vishu Thoran, Beans Thoran, Beetroot Pachadi, Manga Peukku, Tomato Rasam, Aviyal, Sarkara Varatti, Olan, Chakka Aviyal, and Semiya Payasam. Everyone joyfully embraces the distinctive element of the festival termed the Vishu Sadya.
