On September 14, we observe Gobstopper Day. Gobstoppers, also known as jawbreakers, are hard, typically spherical, sugary candies with multiple layers of sweetness. On Gobstopper Day, there is no greater occasion to reminisce about the sweetness of these candies from childhood. This day is celebrated annually, allowing people to unwind and indulge in all things related to gobstoppers, as well as the chocolates themselves.
The term “gobstopper” is derived from the British and Irish vernacular term for the mouth, “gob.” In the first half of the 20th century, British schoolboys favoured the candy.
The origins of the gobstopper can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where natural ingredients such as fruits, nuts, and spices were used to create treats. In the 1500s, the manufacture of sweets began on a limited scale and all products were created by hand; however, in the 1700s, machinery was introduced in larger confectionery companies to create more interesting and distinctive sweets, such as the gobstopper.
Slowly depositing layers onto a core (such as a pressed ball of sugar or a gumball) results in the creation of gobstoppers, which takes several weeks due to the repetitive addition of liquid sugar.
Gobstoppers have been sold by weight from receptacles in traditional candy stores for at least a century. In the United Kingdom and the United States, gobstoppers were ubiquitous candies between World Wars I and II.
Roald Dahl used the name in his 1964 novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” when he devised the Everlasting Gobstopper, which was initially manufactured by Breaker Confections and later acquired by Nestlé.
Everlasting Gobstoppers were sold under the Willy Wonka Candy Company brand manufactured by Nestlé. It was introduced by Breaker Confections in 1976.
