Herb Day, observed on the first Saturday of May, is a celebration that encourages cultivating herbs and honours those with a culture of herb cultivation. This year, the date is May 6. It was established and organised by the HerbDay Coalition, a group of five non-profit organisations. The holiday encourages individuals to learn more about herbs, cultivate them, and incorporate them into their daily lives more frequently.
The Background of Herb Day
Herb Day was established in 2006, a time when the word ‘herb’ was still somewhat intimidating. Medical physicians, naturopaths, and acupuncturists were not yet comfortable incorporating herbs into their practises, and the general public had a limited understanding of the topic. The HerbDay Coalition is comprised of five non-profit organisations that wanted to establish a day to celebrate the medicinal properties of herbs. We invite you to hold your own celebration on the first Saturday of May using the herbs in your garden or on your patio.
Ancient Greek philosopher Theophrastus divided the world of vegetation into trees, shrubs, and herbs. Herbs are additionally divided into three categories: culinary herbs, fragrant herbs, and salad herbs. In the 1600s, pot herbs came to be referred to as vegetables, as they were no longer considered pot-specific.
In its earliest stages, botany was primarily concerned with the pharmacological applications of plants. By the Middle Ages, with the advent of humoral theory in medicine, it was believed that foods, having their own humoral qualities, could modify the humoral temperaments of humans.
Popular plants parsley and sage were frequently combined in mediaeval cookery. In that era, parsley and sage were commonly used to create chicken broth and green sauce, two of the most well-known medicinal foods.
