National Breadstick Day 2023: A celebration of the humble breadstick is held every year on the last Friday in October. This year, the event takes place on October 27. Breadsticks are thin, cooked, crispy, dry sticks of goodness that were first made in Italy. What’s great about breadsticks besides their crunch? You can eat them as a starter or make them fancier by adding all sorts of other foods to them. Yum!
National Breadstick Day 2023: HISTORY
Food scientists don’t all agree on where the first breadsticks, called grissini, came from, but most agree that they were made in Piedmont, Italy, in the late 1600s.
One of these stories starts when Vittorio Amedeo II di Savoia, the young duke, was nine years old. He already had problems with his intestines that made it hard for him to eat and slowed down his growth.
His mom asked the court doctor to help her figure out how to feed her son. Doctor, who was very smart, said it was food poisoning from pathogenic gut germs that got into the bread. The doctor had had similar problems with his intestines. At the time, what did he do? The bread his mom made was “well leavened, well baked with little crumb and very crisp.”
The doctor asked a cook in the area to make the duke more bread sticks. It did the job. Vittorio got better and became king in the end. In the Savoia home, the crisp grissino bread became the favorite. Royalty and other important people at the time who came to visit could all try it out. Duke Vittorio ate his first breadstick only four years ago. There was such high demand for the product that the government had to set a maximum price.
Were the breadsticks really good for the duke? It is possible that people had eaten grissini before later. It does, however, make a good story.
