National Bundt Day 2023: History
Nordic Ware created the sophisticated and uncomplicated Bundt cakes when it decided to introduce a novel cake tin inspired by a specific variety of European cake.
Members of the Hadassah Society, Rose Joshua and Fanni Schanfield, approached the proprietors of Nordic Ware, H. Davey Dalquist and Mark S. Dalquist. They had high hopes that Nordic Ware could manufacture a Gugelhupf cake pan. With marketing purposes in mind, the founders manufactured a limited quantity of these brand-new ‘Bundt’ pans with the letter ‘t’ added.
Due to the lackluster sales of the initial run, the company contemplated discontinuing the range. With the subsequent mention in “The New Good Housekeeping,” its popularity began to increase.
After Ella Helfrich won the Pillsbury bake-off with her ‘Tunnel of Fudge’ prepared in a Bundt pan, the pan’s popularity skyrocketed. Following Ella’s victory in the bake-off, Pillsbury received over two hundred thousand requests for Bundt trays. Over time, the pans overtook the Jello-O molds and ascended to the position of the most sold molds nationwide.
National Bundt Day was established to commemorate the sixty-year jubilee of Bundt pans’ popularity. Pillsbury obtained a license for the name in order to distribute exclusive Bundt pancake mixtures.
Bundt cakes, in contrast to the cakes they resemble, derive their name from the shape of the pan rather than the actual recipe. A variety of recipes are feasible to prepare in a Bundt pan. It is worth noting that the presence of a central opening indicates that a greater proportion of the batter is in contact with the pan. Due to this and the larger capacity of Bundt pans, adjustments must be made to the baking time and temperature when using them.
