Although National Chai Day has only been celebrated since September 21, 2018, the drink is said to have been established over 5,000 years ago for medicinal purposes and as a royal tea. Its earliest form consisted only of a mixture of seasonings and no tea leaves. The British, during their colonial occupation of India, added leaves from the Camellia sinensis plant, as well as milk and sweetener, to the beverage and served it in a variety of forms.

Today, chai is renowned for the numerous health benefits it provides, which are a direct result of its constituents.
