According to a 1953 article in the Philadelphia Bulletin, the credit belongs to Al DePalma’s Italian luncheon in Philadelphia. During World War I, the sandwiches prepared by the luncheon were popular among Italian immigrants who worked at the Hog Island Shipyard in Delaware, where the term “hoggies” originated. In fact, Al DePalma allegedly became known as the “King of the Hoggies.”

However, another school of thought contends that hoagies originated in another Chester restaurant named Emil’s. According to another account, these sandwiches were donated to the less privileged by deli owners in south Philadelphia. According to legend, the term “hoagie” was derived from the phrase “on the hoke,” which means “to scrounge” and is associated with the indigent. It is also alleged that the name “hoggie” is a play on the word “hog” because the sandwiches were so large that those eating them resembled pigs! Not our ideas, but theirs.
