The background of National Hazelnut Cake Day

The Bible and ancient Greek and Roman mythology frequently mention hazelnuts, which were believed to have curative properties. Pliny the Elder, a Roman scholar from the first century A.D., and Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher and botany teacher (born around 370 B.C. ), both wrote exhaustively about hazelnuts.

Native American communities utilised hazelnuts that grew in the eastern woodlands, Oregon, and California prior to the arrival of Europeans. Raw and roasted hazelnuts were used for lubricants and consumption. Hazelnut milk was used for medicinal purposes, such as treating coughing and colds. The roots were used to create a blue fabric dye, while the branches were utilised for projectile shafts, basketry, and other purposes.

The advent of native American hazelnuts coincided with the immigration of Europeans to the United States. Robert Prince established a commercial hazelnut tree nursery in Flushing in 1737. This occurred after Lewis and Clark returned from their expedition with specimens of native hazelnuts, which were identical to those cultivated by Prince in his nursery. In 1856, the history of American hazelnuts began in Scottsburg, Oregon. Sam Strickland, a retired English sailor, settled in Douglas County and planted the first documented hazelnut tree in the Pacific Northwest. And now, 160 years later, Oregon is renowned for producing the finest hazelnuts in the world.

There are several names for hazelnuts, including Pontic, filbert, and cobnuts. Native to the Northern and Southeastern United States, as well as the Midwest and Canada.
