National Orange Wine Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

National Orange Wine Day was created in 2018 by the "National Day Registry" in an effort to increase public awareness of this stunning but relatively obscure wine.

National Orange Wine Day is observed annually on October 6, but any day is a fine day to crack open a bottle. Now we understand what you are thinking: “Orange wine? Like orange-based wines? That’s great! Indeed, it does sound cool. Orange wine is not, however, a wine produced from oranges. It has no relation to citrus. It is a wine produced from white grapes fermented with their skins intact. This is what imparts the distinct hue to the final product. Although you may not have seen orange wine in many places, we assure you that will soon change!

The background of National Orange Wine Day

National Orange Wine Day was created in 2018 by the “National Day Registry” in an effort to increase public awareness of this stunning but relatively obscure wine. Now, you may not have seen orange wine in your local liquor store or even at your favored watering hole, but this wine has ancient roots.

Wine historians believe that orange wine was first produced in Georgia, Europe around 6000 BCE. Interestingly, Georgia is also believed to be the birthplace of wine. In the succeeding millennia, orange wine fell into obscurity. Around two decades ago, however, wine aficionados from all over the globe rediscovered this uncommon variety of wine, sparking a revival.

This variety of wine is referred to as “skin-contact wine” due to the method by which it is produced. Orange wine, like red, white, sparkling, and rose wines, is produced by pressing and fermenting fruits — specifically white wine grapes.

Simply stated, white wine is made from grapes with their skins removed, red wine is made from grapes with their skins on, and rose wine is made from grapes whose skins were left on for a brief period of time.

Orange wines, also known as wines with skin contact, are produced from white grapes with their skins intact. During the fermentation process, the skins and seeds of the crushed grapes impart a more tannic character and a darker hue. Numerous skin-contact wines attain a brilliant amber hue, despite the fact that the majority of them are more golden yellow than orange.
