Sprinkle Day is annually observed on July 23. As the name suggests, the day was created to honour the joy brought about by the existence of sprinkles, the colourful sugar particles we all adore. Sprinkles are used for a variety of purposes throughout the globe, with ice cream topping being the most common. It is a well-established fact that sparkles make everyone’s day a little bit better, despite the difficulties. This day is dedicated to learning about and experimenting with various sprinkle variations.
The background of Sprinkle Day
At least since the 18th century, sprinkles have been known as Nonpareils. The concept of modern sprinkling dates back to 1913, when Dutch confectioner Erven H. de Jong created a product called hagelslag. The latter was intended to be utilised as a spread for bread and butter.
By the 1930s, Hagelslag had arrived in the Tri-State and New England regions of the United States. This marked the beginning of their colourful fame. The American public received a facelift for Hagelslag. In the United States, they became known as “Jimmies” and were used as a cake garnish. However, disputes over the true ownership of the creation began to emerge. A Pennsylvanian factory, for example, began to assert that it was the inventor of the beloved Jimmies. In the 1940s, sprinkles began their vocation as an ice cream topping. The use of sprinkles as a garnish for ice cream can be traced back to Dr. Edward Bringham. To raise money for The Jimmy Fund, he began offering rainbow sprinkles as a topping option for ice cream cones for an additional cent.
Sprinkles can now be found all over the world. They are known as ‘hagelslag’ in the Netherlands, Jimmies in Boston and Philadelphia, meses in Indonesia, and’muizenstrontjes’ in Belgium. Sprinkles have become an indispensable element of the modern palette, regardless of their name.
