World Gin Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

World Gin Day is celebrated annually on the second Saturday of June, and this year it will occur on. World Gin Day was established to honour the spirit for which the day is named. Neil Houston, a resident of Birmingham, established the day in 2009. In 2010, World Gin Day travelled to London under the direction of Emma Stokes. In 2013, Stokes later assumed responsibility for the holiday from Houston. Today is World Gin Day, an opportunity for gin lovers to express their passion. It also serves as a gateway for those seeking to sample the spirit.

The background of World Gin Day

Gin is a globally popular distilled juniper-flavored alcoholic beverage. In the process of producing aqua vita, European monks and alchemists initially created the spirit as a medicinal beverage. The earliest records of gin date back to southern Italian Benedictine monasteries surrounded by juniper. Juniper was an essential component of period physician’s equipment. Doctors during the Bubonic Plague, for instance, stuffed juniper into the beaks of their plague masks for protection against the Black Death. Der Naturen Bloeme, a 13th-century encyclopaedia, contains the earliest known written mention of ‘jenever’, the traditional Dutch gin.

Dutch and Flemish distilleries began selling gin as a treatment for kidney problems, lumbago, stomach maladies, gout, and gallstones by the middle of the 17th century. By the late 1600s, gin was considered a suitable substitute for brandy in England. In the 1720s, approximately one-fourth of London’s households were generating their own gin. This period became known as the Gin Craze, during which the British Parliament attempted to enact a series of laws to limit the widespread consumption of gin.

Today, gin has experienced a renaissance due to the growing prevalence of mixology. Gin, which typically contains at least 40% alcohol, is simple to mix into beverages. Gin and tonics and martinis are two popular alcoholic beverages.
