Accelerate A.C.L. Awareness Among Young Women Day is annually observed on April 5. It seeks to educate parents, coaches, educators, and young women about how to prevent and treat ACL injuries. The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a ligament in the knee joint that prevents the tibia from gliding in front of the femur and also allows the knee to rotate. Several studies indicate that women have a higher incidence of ACL injuries than males.
The ACL is one of the ligaments in the human knee that prevents the tibia from sliding forward in front of the femur. In the knee, three bones come together to create a joint: the femur (thighbone), the tibia (shinbone), and the patella (kneecap). (patella). Ligaments, which are fibrous connective tissues, connect these bones to one another. The cruciate ligaments are situated in the knee joint to govern the forward and backward movement of the knee and to protect it from any abnormal movement. The anterior cruciate ligament (A.C.L.) and the posterior cruciate ligament (P.C.L. ), which cross each other, are the two varieties of cruciate ligaments. While the A.C.L is in the front, the P.C.L is in the rear.
The anterior cruciate ligament can be sprained or torn for a variety of reasons, including direct collision or contact, decelerating while running, landing incorrectly from a jump, swiftly changing direction, or stopping abruptly. A person may hear a “popping” sound and feel their knee give out from underneath them if they have an ACL injury. Other possible symptoms include pain, edema, loss of full range of motion, difficulty walking, and tenderness along the joint line. Athletes are most prone to ACL injuries. Those who intend to return to active competition are typically advised to undergo surgery. Those who intend to retire to a less active lifestyle, however, may choose non-surgical treatment over surgery.
According to studies, female athletes are more susceptible to ACL injuries than their male counterparts. This could be due to variations in muscular strength, physical conditioning, neuromuscular control, increased ligament laxity, or pelvis and lower extremity alignment. Regardless of the cause, women are more at risk. This emphasises the need to disseminate more information and raise awareness in order to reduce the incidence of ACL injuries among young women.
National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2023: Date, History, Facts
According to a study conducted in 2013, 53.2% of female football players sustained A.C.L. injuries.
Basketball is a sport that requires leaping and landing, and landing incorrectly can result in injury.
11.4% of female high school athletes tore their ACL while playing softball, according to a 2013 study.
The A.C.L. is susceptible to injury due to the collisions and manoeuvres that are typical of football.
Due to the hazardous manoeuvres involved in the sport of skiing, A.C.L. injuries are possible.
