International Ear Care Day 2023: Date, History, Facts

The World Health Organization (WHO) was established in 1948 to oversee healthcare and medical services throughout the world.

March 3 is International Ear Care Day. This day raises awareness about preventing hearing loss and maintaining the health of our ears. This is a World Health Organization initiative. This action was also taken to provide hearing-impaired individuals with necessary assistance and improve their quality of life. This day is observed by raising awareness about ear care and assisting those in need.

The background of International Ear Care Day

The World Health Organization (WHO) was established in 1948 to oversee healthcare and medical services throughout the world. The goal also included preventing the spread of diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis in developing nations. There are approximately 141 offices and six regional offices at the World Health Organization’s Geneva headquarters.

In 2015, the World Health Organization launched the campaign Make Listening Safe. The purpose of the campaign was to inform individuals, particularly adolescents, about the dangers of listening to music at high volumes and other habits that damage the ears. The WHO recommended not listening to music louder than 85 decibels and wearing earplugs when attending a concert. Additionally, they encouraged individuals to have their ears examined by a medical professional every few months.

It is believed that the WHO chose March 3 as International Ear Care Day because the date 3/3 resembles the shape of human ears. On this day, a theme is chosen and the media, non-governmental organisations, and other groups join forces to raise awareness about the precautions necessary to maintain good ear health. This day is also dedicated to individuals with hearing loss and their efforts to improve their quality of life.

The theme of International Ear Care Day is “Listen with care to hear for life.” The WHO wishes to inform the public that it is possible to maintain healthy hearing throughout one’s lifetime if proper procedures are followed. WHO encourages governments, societies, non-profit organisations, and corporations to raise awareness about ear health and safety and practise safe listening.
