National Fragile X Awareness Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about F.X.S.

National Fragile X Day is observed every year on July 22. The purpose of this day is to bring attention to Fragile X syndrome (F.X.S.). F.X.S. is the “most common inherited cause of autism and intellectual disabilities worldwide.” There is currently no treatment. This genetic disorder is caused by the inactivation of a solitary X-chromosome gene. This gene in particular is required for the synthesis of a brain-developing protein. The absence of this protein, which is present in F.X.S, causes developmental issues.

The background of National Fragile X Awareness Day

The Fragile X syndrome is the “most common inherited cause of autism and intellectual disabilities worldwide.” It affects both genders. Those with F.X.S. have typically delayed speech and language development. Along with anxiety, A.D.H.D., epilepsy, and autism, these individuals may also exhibit intellectual disabilities.

In the 1990s, activist groups fought fiercely for legislative recognition of Fragile X syndrome. The Children’s Health Act of 2000 was an effort to establish a research act for conditions such as Fragile X, autism, juvenile arthritis, juvenile diabetes, and paediatric asthma.

The FRAXA research foundation has played a pivotal role in the battle for F.X.S. recognition. During his efforts to pass legislation, David Busby earned a great deal of favour with Congress members. Even though there is no cure for the condition, these Congresspeople understood the importance of raising awareness; therefore, when Brusby requested a day dedicated to those living with F.X.S., they complied. Thus, July 22, 2000 became the very first National Fragile X Day.
