Blood donation has a lengthy history, with the first transfusions performed using inadequately understood science and very early research.
World Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually on June 14 by organisations across the globe. An event that raises awareness of the significance of blood donation to the health industry, as its applications are far more diverse than anyone could imagine. Blood donation has been an essential cornerstone that has aided the world on numerous occasions, including plasma treatments, research, and emergency uses.
Blood donation has a lengthy history, with the first transfusions performed using inadequately understood science and very early research. Richard Lower was the first person to investigate the science of blood donation in animals. He was able to effectively transfuse blood between two dogs without any significant adverse effects.
From that point on, the science surrounding the topic of blood gradually evolved, shattering taboos and moving away from animal experimentation. From advancements in transfusion technology to Karl Landsteiner’s discovery of the ABO human blood type system, blood transfusions rapidly became a mainstay in health and medical topics.
As a result of the success of World Health Day in 2000, which focused on blood donation and the safety of transfusions, health ministers from around the world unanimously declared in May 2005, at the 58th World Health Assembly, that World Blood Donor Day would be celebrated annually on June 14, Landsteiner’s birthday.
World Blood Donor Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of regular blood donations, which are necessary to maintain a stable blood supply in the health industry, and to honour the efforts of medical professionals who work in the research and development of new technologies and uses for donated blood, as well as those who use blood on a regular basis. This day is also used to express gratitude to benefactors for their service and dedication to saving lives and bettering the world.
