World Trauma Day 2023: Date, Background, Facts about P.T.S.D.

The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about trauma and educate the public on how to respond to traumatic incidents and fatalities.

World Trauma Day is observed annually on October 17 with a focus on preserving lives and responding appropriately to emergency situations. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about trauma and educate the public on how to respond to traumatic incidents and fatalities. Did you know that traumatic injuries have killed more persons under 45 than malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis combined? Furthermore, over 9 percent of fatalities worldwide are caused by trauma! Observances of World Trauma Day endeavor to reduce these rates.

The Background of World Trauma Day

In 2011, World Trauma Day was established in New Delhi, India. This was a result of the high number of road-related fatalities in the country — an estimated 400 persons per day. The purpose of this day is to reduce trauma-related injuries and fatalities in the United States and around the world.

Road accidents are regarded as one of the most prevalent causes of traumatic experiences worldwide. Immediately following are traumatic experiences from military operations, domestic violence, and sexual assaults. These experiences, if not managed properly, can result in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in victims. According to accounts dating back to the fifth century, B.C. trauma was evident in Ancient Greece and among American Civil War combatants during the 1860s.

Many conceptions of trauma changed as a result of the Second World War. Then, soldiers were permitted to take a break from the conflict to clear their heads before returning to battle later. Throughout the Vietnam and Korean conflicts, talk therapy for trauma victims gained traction. The then-Veterans Administration, now known as the Department of Veterans Affairs, initiated a group therapy programme for victims of post-traumatic stress disorder. The observance of World Trauma Day, on the other hand, ensures that individuals are well-informed about how to manage with trauma and, whenever possible, avoid it.
