They break their fast on Dwadashi Tithi, the day after Ekadashi. In total, there are 24 Ekadashi celebrations each year.
Every two months, on Ekadashi, Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha, respectively. It is said that devotees who keep the Ekadashi fast are blessed with joy, prosperity, and salvation (Moksha) by Lord Vishnu.
The two rules of Ekadasi are Smartha and Vaishnava. Ekadashi should be visible at the time of the local sunrise, according to the Smartha norm. The Ekadashi that the vaishnava observes is untarnished by Dashami tithi. Perhaps one day after Smartha fasting day is Vaishnava fasting day.

Legend Behind The Vrat
Legend has it that King Indrasen of Mahishmati Nagar was a mighty devotee of Lord Vishnu during the Satyuga. In his Mahishmati realm, everyone lived contentedly and there was no unrest. Devarshi Narada Muni showed up in the king’s court one day as he was having a conversation with his ministers when they were seated in the court.
The sage Narada told the king that although everyone in the kingdom was living in peace, your father was bound to live in Yamaloka because of his poor karma. When King Indrasen learned of this, he inquired of Devarshi Narada regarding the condition of his father’s soul. The sage advised him to fast on Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month in order to atone for his father’s transgressions.
Then King Indrasen inquired of Sage Narada regarding the Ekadashi vrat. Narada advised taking a river bath on the tenth day and doing Shradh for your ancestors just one day before Indira Ekadashi. Worship Lord Vishnu on Ekadashi and then indulge in fruit in the evening. Your father would gain virtue from keeping this fast. Together with his brothers, King Indrasen observed the ritual fast of Indira Ekadashi. As a result, his father was saved, and once King Indrasen passed away, his soul entered heaven.
