International Strange Music Day is observed on August 24. This is a day for music lovers who have a special place in their hearts for the strange and unusual, particularly when it comes to music and songs. International Strange Music Day also encourages the rest of us to add something eccentric and uncommon to our regular playlist. ‘Strange’ does not necessarily imply that you must listen to something that does not appeal to you; you could also listen to new musical genres, artists, and even music in different languages. Your decision is solely yours! The purpose of International Strange Music Day is to broaden our musical tastes.
The background of International Strange Music Day
Patrick Grant, a New York City-based musician and composer, founded International Strange Music Day. The purpose of the celebration was to encourage people to perform and listen to new types of music. Grant believed that something as basic as expanding our musical tastes could make us more tolerant and open-minded. He adheres to the mantra “listening without bias.” In 1997, Grant promoted his new album “Fields Amaze” on the birthday of the father of his girlfriend’s mother, who was also his artistic mentor. By 2002, the day had become a global phenomenon involving numerous performers and venues. This expanding movement is now associated with concerts, has its own record label, and is supported by summer camps. The day is also valued for its capacity to stimulate youthful minds.
In 2012, Grant challenged the musicians of New York City to participate in an International Strange Music Day Performance Soiree, and the celebrations took a new turn. Numerous bizarre bands and musicians, including Jolly Ramey, The Dreamscape Floppies, Da Groove Commanders, and Micro-tons o’ Fun, participated in the party, which was a tremendous success! Since then, additional festivities have been held in New York City and other cities across the nation to celebrate the day. Additionally, the University of London celebrates the day with events, contests, sing-alongs, and band performances.
