International Sweater Festival Day

International Sweater Vestival Day 2023: International Sweater Festival Day is held every year on the second Friday after Thanksgiving. This year, it is December 2. There’s no denying that sweater vests are back in style, whether you love them or don’t care about them at all. And because it’s a trendy holiday, people all over the world are telling others to wear sweater vests too.

That’s why we love the idea of having an International Sweater Festival Day. What is the whole point of this idea? To connect with others, because no other item of clothing is worn by such a wide range of people, from young people to older people to people just trying to stay warm.

International Sweater Vestival Day: Hsitory

Even though some people thought it was a mistake, this variety of clothes was made to be useful. People who play sports can use it to make them sweat, which helps them lose weight. When Julia Felsenthal was a staff writer at “Slate Magazine,” she wrote a history piece about the sweater vest. She claimed that rowers wore the first sweater vests in 1882, but they were different because they had long sleeves. The article doesn’t say when the arms were cut off to match the current trend, but it is thought that football players from Michigan got rid of the sleeves so they could breathe better while playing, and the style has stuck around ever since.

By the 1900s, this simple garment was seen on many guys, and they wore it with pride. Not long after, the sweater vest also became popular with both men and women. Stars were very excited about this outfit. Cher Horowitz, who played the lead in Clueless, and later Eleanor Roosevelt wore a sweater vest with her tweeds in 1934, making another fashion statement. Famous designers like Dior, Givenchy, and Prada also wore this outfit, which cemented its reputation in people’s minds.

People were interested in other things during the World Wars, and the sweater vest fell out of style for a while. When the 1970s came around, sweater vests were back in style, but only in places like the U.K.

An American football team boss and sports fans (especially golf fans) have worn sweater vests for a long time. Since then, the sweater vest has only been a minor fashion trend. That is, until the Spring/Summer 2017 fashion show, when big designers like Raf Simons and Prada played with it again. By 2020, the sweater vest was trending like crazy on the internet. Celebrities loved it, and fashion houses said it was the next big thing.

It’s not clear who made this day official. One story from the “Boston Globe” by reporter Carolyn Johnson is the only one that talks about it. Johnson may have come up with the term “Sweater Vestival,” but no one knows for sure. Some people think she may have had a helper. Did you know that Knoxville, Tennessee has a silly version of this day every May that has nothing to do with this day? In almost 65 countries around the world, including Boston, New York, London, and Auckland, people celebrate this day, no matter where it came from.
