It was originally meant to convey how institutionalised individuals could develop a sense of self-worth through acts of care and preservation. In the 1960s, the phrase spread from the medical community to the general public due to civil rights activists, primarily The Black Panther Party. Self-care gained popularity as a means to combat activist burnout.
Angela Davis, a civil rights activist, stated in a 2018 “AFROPUNK” interview, “For a long time, activists did not necessarily believe it was important to care for themselves in terms of what they eat, mental self-care, cultural self-care, and spiritual self-care.” In 1966, cofounders Huey Newton and Bobby Seale defined the famous Ten-Point Programme of the Panthers, which included self-defense as a fundamental component. Thus, by the time the Ten-Point Programme was revised in 1972, medical racism had become a more prominent issue.
The Black Panther Party’s reputation as violent combatants arose from the need to safeguard the health of African-Americans. In her book “A Burst of Light: Other Essays,” the activist Audre Lorde emphasised the connection between self-care and civil rights, which has since become a guiding principle for the Black female identity. Today, the self-care market is estimated to be worth $10 billion, representing a significant portion of the cosmetics industry.
