On July 15, we will celebrate National Be A Dork Day by letting go of our inhibitions for the day. A dork is a person who lacks social skills and has eccentric interests and pastimes, as defined by the dictionary. Typically, a dork’s fashion sense is also questioned, as their ensembles are typically mismatched, ‘ugly,’ or something that the majority of people would not choose to wear. With the advent of technology and the expanding exposure and influence of popular culture, dorks have been portrayed as a’stupid’ group of individuals with conventionally ‘ugly’ characteristics such as buck teeth, acne, and poor eyesight with large-framed spectacles. However, National Be A Dork Day celebrates the dork in all of us!
The background of National Be A Dork Day
Thomas and Ruth Roy of Wellcat founded the National Be A Dork Day. The duo is credited with conceiving and implementing numerous other original concepts and ideas for their holiday-focused business. The origins of the word ‘dork’ are intriguing. It was first used as a colloquial term for ‘penis’ in the late 1800s. People in the British army primarily used it to make mockery of each other. However, nearly a century later, in the late 1960s, the term reached American shores, with university/college settings employing it. Initially, it was considered a derogatory term because it made fun of a person’s absence of social skills. However, as time progressed, the term acquired less derogatory connotations. In many contexts today, the term ‘adorkable’ is used to characterise a person who is both socially awkward and cute and adorable at the same time.
‘Dork’ is frequently confused with ‘nerd’ and ‘geek’. Nerds and geeks are individuals who are intensely fascinated by a subject and conduct exhaustive research. People who are devoted to things such as pop culture icons, comic books, and scientific research are also considered intellectuals and geeks. These individuals will know their passion endeavour inside and out. Dorks, on the other hand, are typically interested in things that are not regarded as conventionally ‘intellectual’. Moreover, their social timidity typically results in a limited social circle. However, you shouldn’t let that deter you from celebrating this day to the fullest. Demonstrate to the world that you are secure in your own skin by unleashing your inner dork.
