National Candy Corn Day 2023: History
A confectioner at Wunderlee Candy Company, George Renniger invented candy maize in the nineteenth century. He created it from Philadelphia in an effort to commemorate the aesthetic appeal he perceived in the contrast between autumnal hues and the beauty of maize. Winter was long, chilly, and dark, and the vivid hues of candies would endure for an extended period of time, evoking pleasure and optimism in addition to a surge of sugar.
It was a brilliant idea to offer Halloween-specific chocolates, as the popularity of various Halloween candies has grown steadily over time. Despite Goelitz, also referred to as Jelly Belly, being more closely associated with commercial candy corn sales, Wunderlee was deemed the pioneer in commercial candy corn distribution.
Originally produced as a feed for poultry, candy corn was only available from March to November. It was originally referred to as “Butter Cream Candies” and was a form of mellow cream. False advertising in the 1950s caused the product to be renamed, as it was no longer butter-based.
At first, making candy corn involved pouring each color into molds one at a time, but this proved to be a very time-consuming process. The ingredients for the recipe were water, sugar, and maize syrup. Following the addition of marshmallow and fondant, carnauba wax was subsequently incorporated. Presently, the recipe remains largely unchanged and supplies us with an ample amount of energy to partake in trick-or-treating activities.
