National Doodle Day, a yearly fundraising event that will take place on September 15 this year, is centred on the concept of drawing to make a difference. On this day, celebrities from the worlds of art, sports, and entertainment are encouraged to take up writing instruments and create doodles, which are then auctioned off online. Proceeds benefit those afflicted by epilepsy and further research in this field. The date used to be September 17, but it now varies annually.
People have been using doodles as a form of communication for a very long time, as evidenced by prehistoric cave depictions. These drawings and symbols, which were possibly made with sticks and stones (or even hands), inform us about the ancestors. Early doodles migrated to a different medium: tablets. Scientists examining ancient artefacts, such as those from Mesopotamian societies, discovered random images on the sides and margins of clay tablets. Some historians believe that doodling as an art form has existed since the beginning of time, but the history of the term is now quite distinct.
During the pre-Revolutionary War in America, a group of British military officers composed “Yankee Doodle,” which they sang to make fun of the disorganised American soldiers. Historically, the term ‘doodle’ signified ‘fool’ or’simple’ During the conflict, the Americans adopted this song as their own, altering it to mock their enemies. Over time, the word came to signify “to do nothing.” Then, in the 20th century, “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town” was published, and the term doodle was used to describe absent-minded doodling. Thus, doodles as we know them were created.
Simultaneously, the study of the subconscious mind to interpret personality and the practise of doodling as a tension reliever gained popularity.

Doodling can help us relieve pressure in a creative and playful manner when we feel stressed.
Researchers believe that doodling can help the brain maintain focus by providing a break for certain brain regions, thereby allowing us to assimilate and retain more information overall.
