The background of National Sisters Day

National Sisters Day’s origins are unknown, but the English term for sister can be traced back to the Old Norse word “systir,” which derives from the Proto–Germanic “swester.” In some societies, the colloquial meaning of “sister” has expanded to include women who share an intimate friendship. Regardless of whether they are related by blood or by companionship, sisters have been kicking butt and calling each other names since the beginning of time. Let’s take a moment to recognise and honour some remarkable sisters throughout history.

In 39 CE, Trung Trac and Trung Nhi led the first Vietnamese independence movement by successfully rebelling against their Chinese rulers and establishing a matriarchal independent state. They were reared learning martial arts and studying the art of warfare, and as a result, they were able to form a large army of predominantly female rebels.

Angelina and Sarah Grimke were women’s rights activists and abolitionists in the 19th century, which is quite remarkable given that their father was an affluent slave owner in their hometown of Charleston. The women renounced their opulent way of life, relocated to the north, became Quakers, and delivered lectures on their experiences witnessing the brutality of slavery.
