Psychic Day in U.S. 2023: Date, History, Facts about Psychic on Television

We anticipated the observance of Psychic Day for a very long time! Every year on the first Sunday of August, Psychic Day commemorates the abilities of all psychics. Did you know that psychics believe that everyone is born with psychic abilities? This is why these celebrations also honour those who are attempting to develop their dormant psychic abilities.

The background of Psychic Day

There are numerous definitions of the term ‘psychic,’ but it generally refers to someone who is highly intuitive and employs extrasensory perception (ESP) or a’sixth sense’ to acquire information that normal senses cannot.

The word itself is derived from the Greek word ‘psychikos,’ which means ‘of the mind’ or’mental.’ The term ‘psychic’ is attributed to French astronomer and spiritualist Camille Flammarion, and many assume that English lawyer and legal writer Edward William Cox introduced it to the language in the late 1800s.

Since ancient times, the concept of diverse prediction systems has fascinated the world. Astrology was the most well-known ancient system of fortune-telling, with astrologers using the position of celestial bodies to predict the future and provide insight into people’s lives. Seers and prophets were prominent, as were monarchs’ and queens’ advisors. Ancient Egyptian seers served as ministers of Ra, the sun god. Additionally, they practiced’scrying’ by dumping ink into water and’reading’ the resulting shapes. Ancient Greeks believed that the Pythia, a succession of priestesses who presided over the Oracle of Apollo in Delphi, Greece, could deliver prophecies inspired by Apollo himself. Some accounts describe how the Pythia would deliver these oracles — the ancient term for an oracle’s message — in a hysterical state while speaking gibberish. Others believe that the Pythia spoke clearly. Recent evidence suggests the presence of ethylene gas, which may have contributed to the frenzy. This practise ended when Emperor Theodosius I ordered the closure of all pagan temples.

The French apothecary and seer Michel de Nostredame is one of the most well-known visionaries in history, although he is better known by his Latinized name, Nostradamus. His 6,338 written prophecies (or quatrains) primarily concern calamities such as plagues, earthquakes, wars, floods, invasions, murders, droughts, and battles. He did not date any of these, and they are all very generic.

By the late 18th century, a variety of psychics and methods were recognised. The United States was particularly captivated by séances, clairvoyance, and telepathy during this period. By the mid-19th century, Modern Spiritualism had taken root in the United States and the United Kingdom. It was widely believed that individuals could communicate with the dead. During this time, visionaries such as Daniel Dunglas Home and Helena Blavatsky rose to prominence, and societies were also founded. Since the 1960s, psychic readings and advertisements for psychics have been widespread. Psychic readings were available via phone, in-home, and at psychic fairs.

Even science fiction was not exempt, as numerous popular books, film franchises, and television series feature ‘psychic powers.’ Popular titles include “The Talents Universe” series by Anne McCaffrey, Jean Grey from the “X-Men” series by Marvel Comics, and the Disney Channel Original Series “That’s So Raven” and its spin-off “Raven’s Home.”

We believe Richard R. Falk created Psychic Day in the nineteenth century. This was ostensibly a publicity ploy designed by him to promote the celebrity psychics he managed. Regardless of the cause, this day and its associated celebrations have garnered enormous interest ever since.
