Read An eBook Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The concept of an ebook was conceived in 1930, after Rob Brown viewed his first sound film. He introduced this concept in his manifesto, describing how he envisioned the future of literature.

Read An eBook Day is observed every September 18 to honour the 24/7 reading accessibility and ease that ebooks offer. Even though the concept of an ebook was conceived in 1930, it did not become a reality until 1941 years later. An ebook (electronic book) is a digital book that can be perused on dedicated e-readers, mobile phones, tablets, or personal computers. An ebook may include either text or images, or both. Due to the accessibility and immense popularity of ebooks, numerous classics and old best-sellers have been republished as ebooks. Even many authors are opting to disseminate the majority of their books exclusively in ebook format.

The background of Read An eBook Day

The concept of an ebook was conceived in 1930, after Rob Brown viewed his first sound film. He introduced this concept in his manifesto, describing how he envisioned the future of literature.

Angela Ruiz Robles, a Spanish teacher, devised the first automated book reader, the Enciclopedia Mecánica, in 1949. Texts and images were inserted using spools, and the device was powered by compressed air. Robles conceived of the idea for an automated reader in an effort to reduce the number of texts that students had to bring to school daily. However, the device was never mass-produced, and its prototype is now on display at the National Museum of Science and Technology in A Corua.

Despite Robles’s invention, it took 22 years for the first ebook to be published, and that was due to a combination of good fortune and the advent of the internet. Michael Hart decided to input his copy of the Declaration of Independence into a computer in plain text after receiving unprecedented computer time. He then made it available for unrestricted download on the Internet. This resulted in the establishment of Project Gutenberg, an organisation dedicated to producing electronic copies of texts and publications.

The late 1980s and 2000s witnessed various inventions and innovations that helped shape the ebook into what it is today, including the introduction of the first e-readers, the standardisation of ebook formats, and the development of online ebook stores.

In 2014, OverDrive came up with the concept of a day to honour the existence of ebooks. This eventually resulted in the September 18 observance of Read An Ebook Day.
