World Refrigeration Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The 26th of June is World Refrigeration Day, and we are all set to celebrate and honour the refrigeration industry for making our lives better than ever. Did you know the first mechanical refrigerator was created more than three centuries ago? Prior to that, people stored food in vaults or under water to keep it cool and free of bacteria. Modern refrigeration transformed the way we live, and it is now regarded as a necessity. According to a 2009 report from the U.S. Department of Energy, virtually all American households now possess at least one refrigerator.

The background of World Refrigeration Day

The invention of refrigeration fundamentally altered the way people live. It provided them with comfort, improved food and beverage storage options, and even helped save lives. This scientific and technological marvel is ubiquitous. It helps surgeons operate in air-conditioned facilities, which reduces the risk of bacterial infection, keeps food and beverages safe for consumption even after weeks, regulates the temperature aboard spacecraft, and is even used for sports! On World Refrigeration Day, the marvel of refrigeration is celebrated. The holiday was first observed on June 26, 2019.

Refrigeration has always been a necessity throughout human history. Around 1000 BCE, people in China used to carve and store ice. At night, Indians and Egyptians kept earthen containers outside to create ice. In the eighteenth century, Europeans buried salted ice enveloped in flannel.

William Cullen observed the chilling tendency of the evaporation process in 1720, which marked the beginning of modern refrigeration. In 1835, Jacob Perkins, the “father of the refrigerator,” was granted the first patent for a liquid ammonia-based vapour compression cycle. His patent was titled “Apparatus and Methods for Producing Ice and for Cooling Fluids.”

In the 19th century, refrigeration’s popularity expanded by leaps and bounds. First used extensively by breweries, then by the livestock industry. Gradually, it became a necessity for regular households.

5 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT REFRIGERATORS

It is observed on October 31, and it is a night filled with eerie activities.

In 1923, General Motors held 80% of the market share with its Kelvinator line, which was introduced in 1911.

It is part of the Large Hadron Collider (a particle accelerator) and is located on the frontier between France and Switzerland.

The machinery was kept in the cellar, while the icebox was located on the floor above; both were connected by wires, which required a hole to be cut in the floor.

Without refrigerators, consumable foods could not be transported to different locations, nor could they be kept fresh for sale.
