After Two Operations
Selling Sunset actress Amanza Smith is a remarkable survivor after undergoing two invasive spinal operations this summer. The 46-year-old interior designer disclosed to PEOPLE that her lower vertebrae were infected with osteomyelitis, a rare and potentially fatal bone infection.
Smith permitted a close friend to transport her to Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre five days after a nearly month-long backache caused her to collapse at her Los Angeles residence in May.
On the basis of an MRI, Smith was diagnosed with advanced vertebral osteomyelitis, a fatal disease that affects 1 in 10 people. Her physician then cautioned her, “One or two more days at home, and you could have been dead.”
Since her diagnosis, her journey has been protracted and arduous. Smith was admitted to the hospital on June 2, where she received intravenous antibiotics and surgery to remove the infection from her bones.
However, Smith’s osteomyelitis, which may have been caused by contamination after a medical procedure or injection (doctors were unsure), had also infected her cervical vertebrae.
The area initially appeared to be too hazardous for labour. “It was near my aorta and kidney,” explains Smith. Her vertebrae degenerated despite the use of antibiotics. “There was a risk that the antibiotics wouldn’t penetrate the bone, and my back could collapse,” she explains.
Smith underwent a six-hour second operation to implant a titanium mesh cage with rods and fasteners to stabilise her spine. “I am an iron woman with rods and screws,” she jokes.
