Deadly Manitoba Highway Crash Claims 15 Lives: Local officials report at least 15 fatalities after a vehicle collided with an elderly-transporting bus in a remote area of the Canadian province of Manitoba on Thursday afternoon.

Constable Rob Lasson of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police stated at a press conference that while the bus was travelling south on Highway 5 towards a casino near the village of Carberry, the tractor-trailer was travelling east on Highway 1.

Deadly Manitoba Highway Crash Claims 15 Lives

Approximately 170 kilometres (105 miles) west of Winnipeg, at the intersection of two highways north of Carberry, a semitrailer collided with a bus.

In addition to the 15 fatalities, authorities report that 10 persons have been hospitalised. Lasson added that the tractor-trailer and bus drivers were among those transported to the hospital. Jennifer Cumpsty, the executive director of Acute Health Services, reported that twelve ground ambulances and one air ambulance raced to the accident scene.

According to Lasson, such a fatal traffic accident had never transpired in Manitoba.

According to RCMP associate Commissioner Rob Hill, the majority of bus passengers were Dauphin-area retirees. As of Thursday night, not all relatives of the victims had been notified.

The flags at the Manitoba legislature have been lowered in mourning, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued a message on Twitter regarding the tragedy.

William Doherty, CEO of the shipping company that owned and operated the tractor-trailer, has pledged full cooperation with the investigation, despite the fact that “at this time, we have limited details from the scene.”
