Derek Venlet was a former student of Westminster High School and later went on to graduate school at California State University, Long Beach. His journey in music started early and he was known for his infectious smile and boundless enthusiasm.

Derek served as principal of Irvine High and was also involved with the Impulse Drum and Bugle Corps. His dedication to music was evident in his role as conductor at Irvine High School, where he played a key role in shaping the future of many young music students. Derek’s talent was not limited to teaching; he also participated in the Broadway-style show “Blast”, which combined choreography with brass, percussion and beauty.

Derek was a devoted Christian, loving husband and loving father. His wife fondly remembers him as his “red-headed gentle giant” and shared touching memories of their 23 years together, filled with laughter, love and the joy of raising their two children, Jimmy and Josephine.

A gathering to honor Derek’s life and legacy will be held on May 13th from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the Irvine High School gymnasium. This event is a celebration of his life, full of music, stories, laughter and food. In addition, a Facebook event will be created to share the details of the meeting.

Support for the family

During these difficult times, the community is coming together to support Derek’s family. Donations are being collected to help them and will be announced soon.

Derek Venlet’s legacy continues to inspire and touch the lives of many. His dedication to music, love for his family and dedication to his students will always be remembered. Rest in peace, Derek Venlet. Your memory will be cherished forever.
