The United States Geological Survey, the foremost international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the United States, reported a magnitude 7.4 earthquake near Sand Point, Aleutians East, Alaska, USA, only 15 minutes ago. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5.8 miles beneath the epicentre at 7:48 pm local time on Saturday, July 15, 2023. In the next few hours or minutes, the exact magnitude, epicentre, and depth of the earthquake may be revised as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies release their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the RaspberryShake network of citizen seismographs that also measured the magnitude of the earthquake as 7.4. In addition to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) also reported the same earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1.
According to the preliminary seismic data, the earthquake should have been felt by nearly everyone in the epicentre area. It could have caused minor to moderate harm.
