The DeSantis campaign headquarters did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Hinkle’s tone was stern, similar to his stance two weeks ago on a rule prohibiting the provision of puberty blockers to transgender children. A preliminary injunction was issued by Judge Hinkle, who was appointed by Democratic President Bill Clinton, to assure that three children continue to receive treatment.
In May, DeSantis signed a bill that made it difficult, if not impossible, for many transgender people to seek treatment, while the DeSantis administration and the Republican-controlled legislature had prohibited gender-affirming procedures for minors.
Advocacy groups estimate that as many as 9,000 transgender Floridians rely on Medicaid to cover medical expenses.
Hinkle also addressed the issue of the medical necessity of gender-affirming procedures, highlighting the fact that transgender individuals suffer from substantially higher rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide than the general population.
Nineteen states, including Florida, have enacted legislation that restricts or prohibits the access of transgender adolescents to medical care. However, it has been available in the United States for nearly a decade and is supported by prominent medical organisations.
