After a six-decade management tenure in the NFL, including 29 years with the Cowboys, Brandt was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019. As the Cowboys’ vice president of player personnel, Brandt was lauded for his talent identifying, as nine of the players he drafted joined him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In 1960, he selected defensive end Bob Lilly in the first round. According to the Hall of Fame, his last significant influence on a selection occurred in 1989 when the Cowboys chose quarterback Troy Aikman.
Brandt appeared to have a crystal ball during the tenth round of the 1964 draught, when he selected a young man from the United States Naval Academy. Roger Staubach won the Heisman Trophy as a quarterback in college, but he was required to serve in the military for four years before he could join the team in 1969.
