Is Andrew Garfield Gay: Simply put, Andrew Garfield’s sexuality is perplexing. The actor has previously portrayed LGBTQ characters, such as Prior Walter in the AIDS-era play Angels in America and a transgender woman in the music video for Arcade Fire’s “We Exist.”
Moreover, he has been a staunch ally of the LGBTQ community; in reality, he donated his 2018 Tony Award to the community and advocated for increased LGBTQ representation in superhero films such as The Amazing Spider-Man.
However, identifying as a member of the LGBTQ community and being a heterosexual ally are separate concepts. Which group does Garfield therefore belong to?
Is Andrew Garfield Gay
While Garfield does not identify as homosexual at this time, he told OUT magazine in 2018 that he is open to the possibility of his s*xuality being fluid.
He stated, “However, my approach to life is to always surrender to the enigma of not being in control. I am always receptive to any impulses that may arise within me.”
Later, he stated that if he had to characterize his identity at the time, he would describe himself as straight.
Many social media users speculated that Andrew Garfield is homosexual after images from his vacation in Italy were leaked.

Some people went too far and alleged that Garfield and his friend were having s*xual relations on the boat. On a yacht in Positano, Italy, the actor and his companion are photographed shirtless.
“Whoever leaked that photo knew exactly what they were doing,” one Reddit user commented.
A Gay Without The Physical Act
In 2017, while promoting the critically acclaimed London National Theatre production of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, Garfield drew criticism for stating that watching RuPaul’s Drag Race was his “life outside of the play” and that he was “a gay man right now just without the physical act – that’s all.”
“As far as I know, I am not a gay man,” he continued. “Maybe I’ll have an awakening later in my life, which I’m sure will be wonderful and I’ll get to explore that part of the garden, but right now I’m secluded to my area, which is wonderful as well.”
The LGBTQ community swiftly criticized Garfield, with some stating that he oversimplified the LGBTQ experience and others claiming that his remarks constituted yet another instance of flagrant queerbaiting.
He was also criticized for portraying a homosexual character as a straight man (or at least physically straight, according to Garfield). This has been a major source of contention for LGBTQ activists, as LGBTQ actors are frequently overlooked for both straight and gay roles.
To his credit, Garfield later clarified what he had meant to say, adding that he intended to “dive in as fully as I possibly can” in the role out of deep respect for the community.
