Michael Chiarello Death: An anaphylactic shock-like reaction that developed into a severe allergic reaction was the immediate cause of Chef Michael Chiarello’s untimely demise.
Chiarello, a former Food Network celebrity, passed away on Saturday at the Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, California, following a week of treatment for an allergic reaction, according to a statement provided. At the time, he was 61.
It is “rare, but it does happen,” according to Dr. Inderpal Randhawa, founder and CEO of the Food Allergy Institute, for an individual to develop an allergy that has the potential to be fatal until a much later stage in life.

Randhawa states that “two-thirds of adults with food anaphylaxis develop the disease after the age of eighteen,” contrary to what Chiarello may have been led to believe.
The method was described by Dr. Randhawa in the context of an elderly individual who develops an allergy and exhibits “atypical symptoms” such as abdominal pain or a rash. As explained by Dr. Randhawa, the risk of anaphylaxis would increase if the individual altered their diet but “continued to cook shellfish where allergens are present in the air over the course of the following year.” “The next time they consume shellfish, it can result in a severe and rapid reaction.”
“Several factors exacerbate allergic reactions,” according to the medical director of pediatric pulmonology, clinical immunology, and allergy at Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach, California. These factors include blood pressure medications, erectile dysfunction medicines, and autoimmune disorders.
“Identify the broad food groups to which he may have experienced an adverse reaction,” Dr. Randhawa instructed, alluding to the autopsy findings. A Chiarello’s camp spokesman has not yet verified whether an autopsy is being performed, despite inquiries from PEOPLE.
