A crisis negotiation team contacted Ellis via telephone upon arrival. However, the conversation ended abruptly when she hung up the phone. Subsequently, Ellis exited the apartment with a knife, re-entered and exited again with a second knife. She charged at the officers while ignoring commands to stop.

Two officers who had received crisis intervention training deployed their firearms in response to the imminent threat, striking Ellis. She was tragically pronounced dead at the site.

The Orlando Police Department has withheld the identities of the involved officers in accordance with Marsy’s Law. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
