Steve was diagnosed with colon cancer in July of last year. Initially, he proclaimed on live television that he would be taking a leave of absence without offering an explanation. In 2019, he disclosed that his colon cancer had spread to his liver the previous year, and a physician had recommended hospice care.

In a 2019 interview with The Observer, he disclosed that he has previously battled severe health issues such as MRSA, septic shock, and a collapsed lung. Once, he had to use a feeding tube to consume while on a ventilator, he said. He went on to say that he also underwent chemotherapy and lost weight.

In April of this year, Steve required hospitalisation as a result of his illness-related complications. After spending twelve days in the infirmary, he returned to work. Two weeks after being discharged from the hospital, he tweeted a statement urging everyone to undergo periodic screenings.
