Tropical Storm Franklin Updates: As of Monday morning’s 8 a.m. update from the National Hurricane Centre, Tropical Storm Franklin was located 250 miles south-southeast of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. It is moving west at 12 mph. Meteorologists predict that a west-to-west-northwest trajectory will persist today. “According to the projected path, the centre of Franklin is expected to reach the southern coast of Hispaniola late Tuesday or Tuesday night,” In addition, they stated, “Some strengthening is anticipated over the next 48 hours.”

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for:

  • The entire north and east coast of the Dominican Republic, from the border with Haiti eastward and southward to Isla Saona A Tropical Storm Warning indicates that tropical storm conditions are anticipated within the warning area within the next 36 hours.
  • A Tropical Storm Watch indicates the potential for tropical storm conditions within the watch area within 48 hours.
  • Other interests in Haiti and the Dominican Republic should track the development of this system.

Tropical Storm Franklin Updates: Land-Based Dangers

Rainfall: Through the middle of the week, Franklin is anticipated to produce rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches, with isolated higher amounts of 6 inches across Puerto Rico. Amounts of 4 to 8 inches of precipitation, with isolated amounts as high as 12 inches, are possible across portions of Hispaniola.

Wind: Tropical storm conditions are expected to develop in the warning area on Tuesday, and are possible in the watch area by Tuesday night. A storm surge will elevate water levels by up to 1 to 3 feet above ground level along the coast immediately adjacent to and to the east of where the storm makes landfall in Hispaniola.
