Understanding the Children’s Book Recall: Child’s Play

The affected children's books were sold between March 2022 and August 2023 at prominent retailers, including Sam's Club, Barnes & Noble, and Target, among others.

Understanding the Children’s Book Recall: Concerns about swallowing hazards have prompted a nationwide recall of over 260,000 children’s books. The affected books, recalled by the New York-based publisher Make Believe Ideas LTD, are bound with spiral plastic rings that may detach and pose choking hazards if or when ingested.

Understanding the Children’s Book Recall

The voluntary recall was initiated in collaboration with Make Believe Ideas LTD, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and Health Canada on September 21, 2023. Animal Counting, Old MacDonald Had a Farm, Dinosaur’s First Words, and Unicorn Colors are among the books affected by the recall.

The publisher is aware of at least two instances in which the spiral plastic rings on the volumes may have become detached. One of the reported cases occurred in Australia, while the other occurred in the United States. There are currently no reports of injuries or fatalities associated with the recalled children’s books.

Animal Counting, Unicorn’s Colors, and five other children’s books published by Make Believe Ideas LTD are recalled.

According to the notice issued by Make Believe Ideas LTD, nearly 260,000 children’s books sold throughout the United States are being voluntarily recalled due to concerns about choking hazards. Additionally, at least 12,900 copies of the affected publications were sold in Canada.

Animal Counting, Dinosaur’s First Words, Old MacDonald Had a Farm, Rainbow Road Book Box, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, Things that Go!, Where’s My Bottom?, and Unicorn’s Colors were among the Made-in-China books affected by the recall.

The affected children’s books were sold between March 2022 and August 2023 at prominent retailers, including Sam’s Club, Barnes & Noble, and Target, among others.

The recalled children’s books were also available on Amazon.com and other retail websites, as well as at school book fairs in the United States and Canada. These volumes may have been purchased as a set for over $21 or as individual packs for between $10 and $11.

Check for the ISBN number printed directly above the bar code on the rear cover to identify recalled books.

Consumers or parents who purchased the affected children’s books within the past few months are urged to remove them from their children’s possession immediately.

Then, you can call Make Believe Ideas LTD at 877-206-1091 (1-877-206-1091 for Canada) to receive refund instructions. Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the publisher can be reached.
