Growing up, he spent considerable time in Mount Vernon, New York, and later established ties with his mother’s family in Plymouth. Unfortunately, when he was 15 years old, his father passed away.

In 1983, JB graduated from Mount Vernon High School. He went on to study engineering and graphic design at Norfolk State University in Virginia.

Although he appeared business-ready, his pleasant demeanour with consumers did not immediately indicate a future in entertainment. Despite this, JB’s first entry into the entertainment industry was not acting, but dancing.

His career in the entertainment industry began with performing as a member of the hip-hop group J. Smoove. Eventually, he made the transition to acting and earned roles on MTV shows such as The Lyricist’s Lounge. The actor then appeared in Lyricist’s Lounge, High End Mix, Pootie Tang, and his first major film, Mr. Deeds, with Adam Sandler.

JB’s aptitude earned him appearances on programmes such as Saturday Night Live (2003–2005), Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2004–2013), Comics Unleashed (2007–2011), and the ongoing Curb Your Enthusiasm (2007–present).
