Who was Ryan Palmeter? The Suspect Behind the Jacksonville Shooting

Authorities have discovered that the suspect left behind multiple manifestos confirming his animosity for African-Americans and his intent to commit the shooting.

Who was Ryan Palmeter: The suspect in the Jacksonville Dollar General store shooting has been identified as Ryan Palmeter. A gunman opened fire in a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday evening, killing three people before turning the pistol on himself.

Sheriff T.K. Waters disclosed that the assault was motivated by racism and that the suspect left behind manifestos detailing his racist hatred. Two men and a woman were murdered by a Caucasian man in his early 20s who was clad in body armour and armed with a lightweight semiautomatic rifle and a handgun. This tragedy is being investigated as a hate crime and has prompted widespread outrage.

Who Was Ryan Palmeter?

The gunman was later identified as Ryan Palmeter, a 21-year-old resident of Clay County, Jacksonville. He entered the Dollar General store with a Glock handgun and an AR-15-style rifle, both of which were equipped with swastikas.

The suspect, who allegedly posted bigoted writings, committed suicide following the attack. Palmeter was seen wearing a ballistic vest on the Edward Waters University campus just prior to the gunfire. His social media presence was limited, with his Facebook page seemingly expunged and only one tweet from 2019 indicating his academic pursuits and graphic design abilities.

Authorities have discovered that the suspect left behind multiple manifestos confirming his animosity for African-Americans and his intent to commit the shooting.

The incident, which regrettably occurred on the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I have a dream” speech, recalls a long history of racially motivated violence against African-Americans.

Residents of Jacksonville and the rest of the nation are saddened by the fact that such incidents continue to mar communities, highlighting the need to address systemic prejudice and gun violence.
