Winter Fuel Payments of up to £600 will be distributed to millions of pensioners: The Winter Fuel Payment, which incorporates an additional cost of living payment, will be distributed to over eight million pensioner households.
Check to see if you are eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, which could be worth up to £600, for the upcoming winter.
People who qualify will receive between £250 and £600, plus an additional cost-of-living payment of between £150 and £300.
Laura Trott, minister of pensions, stated that over eight million recipients will receive the cost of living payment.
She stated that eligible households with a member aged 66 to 79 will receive £500, while those with a member aged 80 or older will receive the entire £600.
To be eligible, a person must have been born before September 25, 1957, and they must have resided in the United Kingdom for at least one day between September 18 and September 24, 2023.
If a person does not satisfy all of these requirements, they may be required to submit a claim in order to receive payment.
The DWP will send eligible households a letter in October detailing the amount of money they will receive.
People who are eligible and receive any of the following forms of assistance will not be required to register for the payment:
- Public pension
- Pension Benefits
- The number of people present Permissible Allowance
- Payment for Individual Independence (PIP)
- Provider Allowance
- DLA is the Disability Living Allowance.
- Income Assistance
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) based on income.
- (JSA) Jobseeker’s Allowance based on income.
- Grants from the War Pensions Program
- Industrial Injuries Disability Payment
- Disability Benefit
- Accidental Death Benefit.
If a person does not receive a letter from the Department of Work and Pensions in October, or if the money has not been paid by January 26, 2024, they should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

How much will I be compensated?
Any money a person receives is tax-free and has no impact on their other benefits or benefit limit.
If a person resides alone or there is no one else in the household, he or she may qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment.
- £500 if the individual was born between 25 September 1943 and 25 September 1957
- £600 for those born prior to September 25, 1943
If a person resides with someone who is eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, that person is also eligible.
The individual’s payment may vary if they receive any of the following:
- Pension Credit
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support.
Those who do not qualify for any of the aforementioned benefits will receive either:
- $250 if both they and their spouse were born between September 25, 1943 and September 30, 1957.
- £250 if they were born between September 25, 1943 and September 24, 1957, but their spouse was born prior to September 25, 1943.
- £350 if they were born prior to September 25, 1943, but their spouse was born between September 25, 1943 and September 24, 1957.
- $300 if both they and their partner were born before September 25, 1943.
If they and their partner jointly file for any of the preceding benefits
One will receive a payment of either:
- £500 if both were born between 25 September 194,3 and 24 September 1957
- £600 if at least one of them was born prior to September 25, 1943.
If they receive any of the benefits outlined above (but not as part of a joint claim), they are eligible for eligibility.
They will be compensated with either:
- £500 if born between 25 September 1943 and 25 September 1957
- £600 for those born prior to September 25, 1943
If a person lives in a care home
If eligible, they will receive either:
- £250 if they were born between 25 September 1943 and 25 September 1957
- $300 if the individual was born prior to September 25, 1943.
A person who resides in a care home will not be eligible if both of the following apply:
- They receive Pension Credit, Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) based on income.
- From June 26 to September 24, 2023, they resided in a care facility continuously.
