675 Tax Rebate: Who is eligible for Montana’s property tax reimbursement program and how to claim it?

Montana Department of Revenue launched a second round of property tax reimbursements, aiming to support homeowners with up to $675, with 10,000 applications filed within 10 minutes.

675 Tax Rebate: The Montana Department of Revenue has initiated the second round of property tax reimbursements for eligible residents as part of a relief program launched in 2023. This effort aims to support homeowners by offering rebates of up to $675 for property taxes paid on their primary residences.

The online application portal for these rebates opened on August 15, 2024, and saw a significant response, with 10,000 applications filed within the first ten minutes. This quick uptake underscores the program’s importance to Montana homeowners.

To qualify for the rebate, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Ownership and Residency: The applicant must have owned and lived in a home in Montana for at least seven months during the year 2023.
  • Payment of Property Taxes: The applicant must have paid the relevant property taxes on the primary residence.

This initiative is designed to alleviate the financial burden on residents by offsetting a portion of their property tax expenses, demonstrating the state’s commitment to supporting its citizens during challenging times.

“The Property Tax Rebate is a rebate of up to $675 per year of property taxes paid on a principal residence. There is a rebate available for property taxes paid for Tax Year 2023,” the Montana Department of Revenue official website reads.

“The rebate is $675 or an amount not to exceed the property taxes paid on a principal Montana residence for tax year 2023. For example, if you paid $425 in property taxes on your principal Montana residence in 2023, you would receive a $425 property tax rebate.

“If you paid $1,200 in property taxes on a principal residence in 2023, you would receive a $675 property tax rebate.”

675 Tax Rebate: What date is the application deadline?

The rebate must be requested by residents between August 15, 2024, and October 1, 2024. Since online applications are processed more quickly and effectively than paper forms, the Montana Department of Revenue encourages their use. Resources for applicants are available on the department website, including tools for locating crucial data like the geocode of the property.

Refunds for online applicants should be processed in 30 days, however, paper applications can take up to 90 days. Since direct deposit is not an option, residents should anticipate a minimum of four weeks for the mail delivery of their rebate cheques following processing.
