California Climate Credit 2025: California has made a smart plan to help people save money while fighting climate change. The state gives citizens a rebate called the California Climate Credit. This credit comes as an automatic discount on utility bills. The idea is simple. The costs of moving to greener energy should not fall only on people. Instead the citizens get some of the economic benefits from laws that fight climate change.

The credit comes from California’s Cap-and-Trade program. Big companies that pollute the air must buy and trade permits for greenhouse gas emissions. The money collected from these auctions goes back to people. About 80% of this money is shared evenly among all residential customers. This means most homes get a fair part of the money.

  • Almost all households in California who get electricity from big utility companies can get the credit. This includes customers of PG&E, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric.
  • Even homes with solar panels get the discount. Small businesses, schools, and non-profit organizations also get the credit on their electricity bills.
