Medicare 2026 Open Enrollment Changes: Medicare open enrollment for 2026 starts on October 15 and ends on December 7. This is the time people can check their plans change them or pick a new one. The main parts of Medicare like A and B and changing Medicare Advantage or Part D stay the same but costs plan choices and coverage will change a bit.

Healthline said “Open enrollment is the opportunity to look at your current plan and add or remove benefits. … Because plans can change annually, it is a good idea to review your plan to ensure it is working well for you.” Even small changes in premiums drug costs or which doctors are covered can make your health spending go up especially if you take medicines a lot or have long term sickness.

Medicare Open Enrollment 2026 Starts This Week: Dates and Details

One big change is the Part D drug spending limit goes up from $2,000 to $2,100 in 2026. After you spend that much on covered drugs you pay nothing more for the rest of the year. The Inflation Reduction Act keeps making the “donut hole” smaller. Lots of people will pay less for brand name and generic medicines with the Extra Help program.

Medicare Advantage plans Changes

Medicare Advantage plans will see changes too. Many regions will have fewer plans because some insurers are reducing their service areas or removing certain options. While average monthly premiums may drop from about $16 in 2025 to $14 in 2026 the smaller number of choices and shifting provider networks could reduce the benefit of these savings.

The out-of-pocket cap for in-network services under MA plans will fall slightly, from $9,350 in 2025 to $9,250 in 2026. New provider directories will show which doctors and hospitals are in-network. If your doctor is removed, you may have a special three-month enrollment period to change plans.

Other Changes

Other changes will bring AI tools in some states to make prior authorizations faster for things like CT scans and implants. Medicare Advantage plans must reply to these requests within seven days to cut delays. Part B premiums will go up from $257 to $288 in 2026, about 11.6% higher. Part D base premiums may rise to around $38.99, a 6% increase, and the yearly Part D deductible will climb from $590 in 2025 to $615 in 2026.

Government Shutdown 2025 Impact: What Happens to Medicare, Medicaid, and Health Care Programs?

People should check any Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) they get by September 30 to see if their Medicare Advantage plan is changing or ending. If they needed a special enrollment period lets them switch plans so their favorite doctors stay in-network.

What you should do now

  • Check your ANOC: Look at your mail or insurer website to see if your doctors, premiums, or benefits are changing.
  • Use Plan Finder: Go to Medicare.gov/plan-compare to see costs and compare 2026 options.
  • Check your prescriptions: Make sure your current medicines are still on your plan and see if copays change.
  • Look for a better plan: If your plan changes a lot, switching might save money, especially with fewer choices.
  • Get help: State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) counselors give free advice for making enrollment decisions.
