The Republican plan aims to cut SNAP funding by shifting costs to states, risking reduced benefits and eligibility. Experts warn this could increase hunger and push many families into poverty nationwide.

SNAP Cuts: House Republicans have put forward a plan to cut a huge amount of money from SNAP, the government program that helps millions of Americans buy food. Their proposal aims to reduce funding by about $290 billion. This plan is part of their larger effort to push President Trump’s agenda into law. The Republican-led House Agriculture Committee says they want to fix SNAP by stopping waste, making the system more responsible, and controlling how much it costs.
SNAP is one of the biggest programs that helps people who don’t have enough money for food. Right now, over 42 million Americans rely on SNAP. The government gives money directly to these people so they can buy groceries. The number of people getting help and the money spent on SNAP has grown a lot in recent years. Back in 2000, about 17 million people got SNAP benefits, costing the government $17 billion. Last year, almost 42 million people got help, with the government spending more than $100 billion.
Who Will Receive Texas SNAP Payments Between May 12 and 18, 2025?
To get SNAP, people usually must have a low income or no income at all. The amount of money someone gets depends on how many people live in their home, how much money they make, and other rules. The program started after the Great Depression and the federal government has always paid for 100% of the benefits.
But under the new Republican plan, starting in 2028, states would have to pay at least 5% of the costs. This could rise even higher if states make mistakes while running the program. In 2023, 28 states had error rates so high that they might have to pay a quarter of the SNAP costs under this new rule.
Even though the overall spending on SNAP might not change right away, states will have to put in more money. Experts believe this will cause many states to reduce the amount of help they give or make it harder to qualify for SNAP. This means fewer people might get the food assistance they need. A study by the Urban Institute says that if the federal money drops by 10%, nearly 900,000 more Americans could fall into poverty.
Food insecurity is a serious problem in the United States. About 13% of all households, or more than 47 million people, don’t always have enough food to eat. This problem is even worse in some parts of the country, especially in Southern states led by Republicans.
Important SNAP Changes for May 2025: Are You Still Eligible?
Big states like California and Texas get more federal money for SNAP because they have more people in need. These states also have bigger budgets and might be able to pay more if the federal government cuts back, but smaller states could struggle a lot.
The Republican plan is part of a bigger budget idea that wants to cut money from many programs, like Medicaid and green energy tax credits, to pay for big tax cuts. Democrats strongly disagree with the cuts, saying it will harm families and farmers and increase hunger in the country. Ohio Representative Shontel Brown said, “It is harmful to families, harmful to farmers and harmful to the country. Increasing hunger to enrich billionaires is just plain wrong.”
