The Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA) program offers eligibility to spouses and children of veterans or service members who fulfill certain requirements.

It is for those who have been declared permanently and disabled as a result of service-connected illnesses. And for those who are currently on active duty and are expected to be released with a permanent and total disability. Also for those who passed away while serving their country or as a result of service-connected illnesses, and who are currently missing in action or have been captured in the line of duty.

Eligible spouses or dependents may apply online through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs or fill out and submit the Dependent’s Application for VA Educational Assistance (VA Form 22-5490) to the VA Regional Processing Office to be enrolled in the program.

A Certificate of Eligibility is provided after the application and must be turned in to the Veteran Certifying Official at UC Merced.
