KBC 14: The father of which Viceroy of India coined the English phrase ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’?

Answer: Lord Lytton

The English words “The pen is mightier than the sword” were first written by novelist and playwright Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839, in his historical play Cardinal Richelieu.

According to author Bulwer Lytton, despite its smaller size, a pen can accomplish more than a sword. The ability to write is more powerful than the power of hatred and war. A sword or a pen do not function on their own; we are the ones who use them. We are the only ones who can decide whether to fight or write. During India’s independence, for example, some people took up swords to fight the British, while others took up the pen to record history and tragedy. Both the pen and the sword made equal contributions. However, the battle against the pen has frequently had a significant impact.

A pen shapes and presents information to readers. For decades, we have watched the world evolve and how the power of writing creates a charm. Writers have fought against Sati Pratha, education barriers for girls, child abuse and child marriages, girl child killing, slavery, and a variety of other social causes, and their efforts have enraged the entire world.

The paragraph on the pen is mightier than the sword emphasises the written word’s omnipresence. We can see that a pen can be used to express public opinions and viewpoints. The primary goal of writing is to connect one’s mind with another and persuade the reader to accept the writer’s point of view. However, the reader is free to hold his or her own opinions. He may agree or disagree with the author. As a result, the pen represents a friendly way of generating ideas.

The proverb implies that writers, authors, or scholars have a greater influence on people than conflicts. The art of writing is more important than the sharpness of a sword. This is due to the fact that the fame of the sword causes pain and does not last forever, whereas the impact of writing is unparalleled, influencing nations for years to come.

The great ideas and opinions that have emerged from the pen of a writer have transported men from Brutality to Compassion. People can think and write down their ideas on a piece of paper, propelling them to a powerful position in society. Writers have proven to be more powerful than even the most powerful warriors. Many great writers have used their pen to demolish dictatorships and monarchies around the world. Writing has resulted in both conflict and resolution. A war may affect thousands of people, but a book has the potential to change an entire nation. War always results in misery and destruction, whereas writing is a blessing to humanity.
