Prior to it, in 1820, Princeton students played a game called ‘ballown,’ which translates to ‘batting of the bladder with knuckles.’ The game involved keeping the object in motion by striking it with a fist. On the first Monday of the academic year, Harvard also hosted a football-style match. This contest was so physically taxing that it was played on “Bloody Monday.”

Rutgers defeated Princeton by a score of 6 to 4 in the first intercollegiate football contest, which was played on November 6, 1869.
