The 8th of August is National Pickleball Day, and we are here to show you how to celebrate in a festive manner. Do you realise that 57 years have passed since the invention of pickleball? The sport is a combination of traditional lawn tennis, ping-pong, also known as table tennis, and badminton. The game is played on a badminton court with a tennis net using ping-pong paddles. Similar to tennis, but less difficult, it is appropriate for all ages. Deirdre Morris, a pickleball instructor, created National Pickleball Day in 2021 to encourage people to learn how to play the sport.
The background of National Pickleball Day
The origins of pickleball date back to 1965 in Bainbridge Islands, Washington, when ex-congressman Joel Pritchard and two other companions, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum, had just returned from a Saturday round of golf. They discovered that their families were idle and decided to play badminton. Nonetheless, there were obstacles. To begin with, there was no shuttlecock. Second, they improvised badminton rackets because they lacked the appropriate equipment. They discovered a Wiffle ball and substituted it for a shuttlecock. The net was lowered to the tennis standard height. Instead of badminton racquets, they used paddles made of plywood. The rest is history: pickleball came into existence.
In the subsequent years, the game’s prominence increased. Barney McCallum initiated the production of pickleball-specific paddles. His creation, the M2 model, became the most popular. Then, in 1972, McCallum founded Pickleball, Inc. and began selling wooden paddles. In 1984, the first United States Pickleball National Championships were contested. When Glendolyn Sanchez-Vicario competed in pickleball for Spain at the 2002 Special Olympics, pickleball gained international attention. In 2016, Florida hosted the U.S. Open Pickleball Championships for the first time.
The game’s popularity increased exponentially. In just three years, from 2016 to 2019, the number of pickleball players grew to 3,300,000, which is remarkable. The Sport and Fitness Association declared pickleball the fastest-growing sport in the United States in 2021. National Pickleball Day was created by pickleball instructor Deirdre Morris to encourage more people to participate in this sport.
